Bad Day For Jesus

Nazareth’s most famous Jewish carpenter may have some ‘splainin to do:

First comes the news that maybe he didn’t really walk on water across the Sea of Galilee (known as Lake Kinneret to Israelis,) but caught a ride on a freak piece of ice.

Then an ancient manuscript shows up saying Judas Iscariot, the guy who sold him out, was actually his most revered disciple. To paraphrase EV on Jewschool, how ’bout an apology for all the anti-Semitic hate spewed by “Christians” over the years based on Judas’ betrayal?

(Sorry, no photos of Jesus on this site. My mother would plotz.)

  1. As a Christian, I’ve never really got the whole condemnation of Judas thing. By the logic of the Bible he was doing what needed to be done to fulfill prophecy, so why blame him? And don’t even get me started on the complete illogic (not to mention disgustingness) of anti-semitism.

  2. I just read about this yesterday, It turns out that this “Gospel of Judas” was being shuffled around from collector to collector and stashed in hidden places before the National Geographic was able to even get some scholars to give it a good look.

Who knows how many other gems from the Judeo-Christian past are stashed away from us. Makes the whole Davinci Code theory sound interesting… then again it bugs the Christians more than it does us.

  3. Be careful on this one. The Judas Gospel may be the work of a sect in Eqypt which sought to deny Christian connection to Jewish roots and was possibly related to the Marcion heresy which held: the creating God found in the Books of Moses was harsh, cruel, and incompetent. Marcion contrasts this demiurge God with the superior loving God of Jesus. Judas is acting in accord with the divine plan of this superior God. Anti-Semitism is an ancient malady.

  4. Apan-
I’m a Jew for everyone- Christians, Muslims, whatever.

But I’m still a JEW, which means I haven’t accepted anyone as my Moshiach. And I’ve got news for you- like most Jews, I’m not “unsure” about it.
