No Gas Today

nogasOy, try telling that to El Yenta Man, who had too much of my famous vegetarian nachos last night. But seriously, folks, today’s the day of the Big Gas Boycott that’s supposed to lower gas prices. Didn’t ya get the memo?

Sadly, it’s a farce. You can skip the AM/PM or the Chevron today if it makes you feel like you’re doing something to stave off the inevitable $5 gallons we’ll be seeing by next summer, but a one-day boycott is a little like a gnat bite in the fat rolls behind the arm of the oil industry. If you really want to piss off the fat cats, trying not driving for a week. The JSpot has more thoughtful suggestions on sane energy use.

As for me, the point is moot as the Yenta minivan is in the shop with a cracked radiator, which will cost far more to fix than a tank of gas. Cars, gas — such tsuris. Think I’ll hop on my bike (it’s got a trailer for the little girl) and go flip off people driving Hummers.

  1. Thanks for the link to JSpot! Glad you liked out piece on it.

I used to find a Hummer occasionally parked in my neighborhood. I wanted to put a sign on it saying something to the effect of, “If you’re not in Fallujah, you don’t need this.”

  2. Representative actually, Kingston’s been in the House since ’93. When you were living on Tybee he was “your congressman,” but now I’m pretty sure that you’re in John Barrows’ (Dem) district.

So am I being paranoid here or wasn’t there a touch of anitsemitic stereotyping going on in that clip?? Note how Kingston attacks Greenwald both for trying to make money and having rich “Hollywood” friends (“Streisand, Speilberg”)& yet in the same rant he practically calls Greenwald a commie — interesting juxtaposition, no?

  4. But Yenta- is Savannah a bike friendly town? I mean in Boulder, its the preferred means of transport, but in Baton Rouge, and I must imagine in other cities as well, its basically a suicide waiting to happen if you ride a bike: no shoulders on the road, blind corners everywhere, rednecks with gunracks and an antipathy for dudes in euro-duds…

  5. Ami ~ Believe it or not, I’ve strapped giant helmets on myself and the kids and with great care to avoid the pick-up trucks and drunk drivers, manage to get to and from school, the grocery store and friends’ homes on our bikes! While only certain parts of town could be considered bike-“friendly,” and there are many that are considered bike-hostile, where there is a will, THERE IS A BIKE PATH.
